Why does yellow powder coat my gutters every spring?
That is pine pollen, and in the Birmingham area it usually peaks in March and April. On its own it washes through, but mixed with oak tassels and spring rain it turns into a paste that settles in the bottom of the gutter and slows the flow to the downspouts. A cleaning in May, after the pollen is done, clears it before summer storms arrive.
Red clay keeps washing out of my flower beds. Is that a gutter problem?
Often, yes. When a gutter overflows or a downspout empties at the foot of the wall, the water digs into the clay, carries it across walks and driveways, and leaves stains.
